PDIC Sample Fees Waived for Counties Affected by Helene

(Updated: Oct. 9, 2024, 5:11 a.m.)

In the aftermath of Helene and the devastation that hit Western North Carolina, our hearts go out to those affected. We hope the long process of recovery in the region is helped by the efforts of many, and that these activities are rapid and efficient.

In light of the attention that will go into recovery, we here at the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic will be waiving fees for samples submitted from counties affected by Helene, for the remainder of the year (2024). The following is a list of counties that will not be charged sample fees:
  • Alexander
  • Alleghany
  • Ashe
  • Avery
  • Buncombe
  • Burke
  • Caldwell
  • Catawba
  • Clay
  • Cleveland
  • Gaston
  • Haywood
  • Henderson
  • Jackson
  • Lincoln
  • Macon
  • Madison
  • McDowell
  • Mecklenburg
  • Mitchell
  • Polk
  • Rutherford
  • Swain
  • Transylvania
  • Watauga
  • Wilkes
  • Yancey
  • Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians

The Turf Diagnostic Lab here at NC State has a similar policy in place, as well.

Please note that many of the plant disease and pest issues people will see as a result of Helene may not manifest until next year. Also these issues may be happening in the roots/soil, so physical samples will likely be needed. Make sure to review the sample submission process in order to best collect the material we need for testing.

From the entire PDIC Team, we hope you and your loved ones are safe and have the things you need to help in this time of recovery.
